Wilderness Sauna Glencoe — Private Hilltop Sauna with Views over Loch Linnhe

Some outdoor saunas stand out because of their social atmosphere. Others because of their setting. Wilderness Sauna Glencoe delivers both — one of the best views I’ve ever had from a sauna, paired with something much harder to find: complete privacy.

Set on a quiet hill overlooking Loch Linnhe, the sauna is booked for one group at a time, meaning the space — sauna, plunge bath and outdoor deck — is entirely yours. Visiting with my fiancé, who’s still fairly new to outdoor saunas, I realised quickly that the private format was just as memorable as the view.

Arriving at Wilderness Sauna Glencoe

We arrived early assuming we’d need to check in at reception before heading up the hill. Instead the whole thing is self-serve. With time to spare we grabbed breakfast from the onsite food truck and sat outside with our coffees watching people drift in and out of the grounds.

Woodlands Glencoe is a beautiful spot in its own right — a central reception hub with a decking area out front, surrounded by woodland. We enjoyed spotting the small eco pods dotted among the trees, and watched a group getting to grips with segways before heading off on a tour. A lovely place to spend time before the session.

When our session time came around we drove up to the sauna, where a designated parking space gives it a slightly VIP feel — a small detail, but it makes it obvious you’re in the right place.

The View Across Loch Linnhe

Driving along from Fort William, we’d already had glimpses of Loch Linnhe in full sunshine — blue water, bright sky, mountains on both sides. But Wilderness Sauna sits at just the right height to make the whole thing feel even bigger.

The entire front wall of the sauna is a floor‑to‑ceiling window looking straight across the loch. Whether we were inside on the bench, outside cooling off, or sitting on the deck between rounds, we spent most of the session just staring out at the water.

A Sauna All to Ourselves

The sauna fits up to four people, but it was just the two of us. Having the whole space to ourselves changed the feel of the session completely.

My fiancé is still getting used to outdoor saunas, so the privacy meant we could take things at our own pace — sitting together inside, cooling off outside, or taking turns in the plunge bath without feeling watched or rushed.

Unlike some wood-fired saunas where the temperature can dip between rounds, the electric stove kept things consistently hot throughout — every time we stepped back inside it felt just as hot as before.

Outside, the plunge bath is set flush into the decking with two waterfall buckets and a shower beside it. I used the plunge between rounds; my fiancé was brave enough to try one of the buckets. From inside we watched small birds landing on the branches right in front of the window. Outside, you could hear them singing.

Is Wilderness Sauna Worth It?

Wilderness Sauna is one of the more expensive outdoor saunas I’ve visited, but the privacy is what justifies the price.

The views across Loch Linnhe are every bit as impressive as you’d hope on a clear day. But it was the quiet, private setup that stayed with me afterwards — having the entire space to ourselves, moving at our own pace, no strangers, no noise. That’s genuinely rare in outdoor saunas at any price.

If you’re looking for a social session or a lively atmosphere, this isn’t it. But if you want somewhere completely your own, with one of the best views in Scotland outside a sauna window, it’s hard to beat.
